Working Slowly Toward the Next Film
Every film I’ve made has moved slowly. Ideas need time to settle. I have to sit with the story, flesh it out, and slowly begin to see the characters come to life. I start to picture the beginning, the middle, and the end.
Once I feel there is a story, I use a framework to begin shaping it, but even then it takes time.
If you’re in the trenches with your own creative work, painting, writing, photographing, filming, try not to doubt the pace of it. Some stories just take longer to become clear.
In a few weeks I’ll be behind the camera again with a small crew and a group of actors. Like every film, we’ll arrive with a plan and slowly shape the movement of the actors in relation to the camera. I’m still refining the script. The story is simple. A man receives difficult health news and begins to realize that healing might mean reconnecting with his estranged brother.
I’m looking forward to being on set. I love the energy of it. I’m also putting together a playlist so everyone can feel the mood of the film. I’ve never done that before, but I like the idea of music quietly filling the room while we work.
A small idea I’m exploring
I’ve been thinking about another way to stay connected with filmmakers who are living this same rhythm. Work, family, responsibilities, and somewhere in between trying to make a personal film.
I’m considering something simple.
Once a month I’ll write a handwritten letter about what the filmmaking process actually feels like while I work through my own scripts and films.
An honest note from someone still trying to make it while balancing life and filmmaking.
Inside the envelope I’d include a small art card and a short prompt to help you reflect on where you are with your own work and the next steps to move your story forward.
I love the idea that once a month you’ll receive a letter from me, something tangible you can open, read, and reflect on.
A reminder that I’m moving through the same space you are. I believe this could become a small community that benefits all of us.
If this sounds like something you’ve been thinking about too, email me and when I move forward, you’ll be the first to know.
Thank you very much.
